If you’re over 50 and have ever smoked for a significant period of time, a simple scan could detect lung cancer before symptoms even appear — and now, it’s fully bulk-billed for Medicare-eligible patients through a new government program. At Qualitas Medical Practice, we’re proud to support this life-saving initiative and help you check if you’re eligible with just a quick GP appointment.
Why Lung Cancer Screening Matters
Lung cancer is Australia’s biggest cancer killer. It’s often diagnosed too late, when treatment is harder and outcomes are poorer. But that’s about to change.
From July 2025, the Australian Government is launching the National Lung Cancer Screening Program — a major step forward in catching lung cancer early through a quick, safe scan called a low-dose CT.
It’s fully covered by Medicare for eligible patients and designed for people without symptoms who are at higher risk because of their smoking history.
Real Change, Real Lives
We often hear stories like this:
“I gave up smoking years ago. I felt fine. But the scan picked up a tiny spot on my lung — something I’d never have known about otherwise. Because it was caught early, my treatment was simple. I got lucky — and I got it in time.”
This program is about giving more Australians that same chance — and more importantly, making sure you don’t have to rely on luck.
Could This Be You?
You may be eligible for this lung cancer screening if:
- You’re aged between 50 and 70
- You’ve smoked for a significant time (typically around 20–30 years or more)
- Currently smoking or given up in the last 10 years
- You currently don’t have symptoms of lung cancer
It doesn’t matter if you’ve quit. In fact, many former smokers qualify, and early detection still makes all the difference.

Have Questions?
What is a low-dose CT scan?
It’s a quick, painless imaging scan that uses a small amount of radiation to take a detailed picture of your lungs. It’s one of the best tools to find signs of lung cancer early.
Is it really free?
Yes — if you meet the eligibility criteria, the scan is fully funded by Medicare.
What if I don’t qualify?
Your GP can still help assess your lung health, offer smoking cessation support, or suggest other preventive checks.
Your Health, Your Future
This is more than a scan. It’s a second chance. Let’s take it — together.
