With mixed emotions, we announce the retirement of A/Prof Peter Tipping from Qualitas Medical Practice Clayton.
After 50 years in medical practice and 35 years as a general practitioner in Clayton, A/Prof Tipping retired from clinical practice on 30 June 2026.
His career has been distinguished by an exceptional contribution to patient care, medical research, education and the local community.
A career in medicine and research
A/Prof Tipping graduated from Monash University in 1975 and completed his early medical training at Prince Henry’s Hospital.
He went on to complete a PhD in 1985 before being appointed as a National Health and Medical Research Council Principal Research Fellow and Associate Professor in the Monash University Department of Medicine at Monash Medical Centre.
Together with his research team, A/Prof Tipping studied the immunological mechanisms involved in kidney disease and atherosclerosis. His work made an important contribution to the understanding of these conditions and resulted in the publication of more than 120 peer reviewed research papers.
A commitment to general practice
While working full time in medical research, A/Prof Tipping remained committed to clinical care and continued to practise part time as a general practitioner.
He initially worked at Blackburn Clinic before joining Monash Clinic, now known as Medi7, at 255 Clayton Road in 1991.
In 2000, A/Prof Tipping and a group of colleagues established Clayton Road Doctors at 291 Clayton Road. He continued to serve the practice and the local community as Practice Principal until February 2024, when the clinic transitioned to become Qualitas Medical Practice Clayton.
Throughout his 35 years as a GP in Clayton, A/Prof Tipping cared for generations of patients and families. His professionalism, clinical knowledge and dedication to his patients earned him the respect of colleagues and the wider community.
An enduring contribution
A/Prof Tipping’s career reflects a rare combination of academic achievement, scientific research, clinical excellence and long term service to general practice.
His influence extends well beyond the consultation room. Through his research, leadership and commitment to patient care, he has contributed meaningfully to medicine and to the health of the Clayton community.
We sincerely thank A/Prof Tipping for his dedication, leadership and many years of service.
It has been a privilege to work alongside him, and we wish him every happiness as he begins the next chapter of his life.
