Skin cancer checks in Neutral Bay with Dr Mohammad Khalesi
Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. According to Cancer Council Australia, around two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70. 1 Skin cancers found early are generally simpler to treat, which is why it’s worth talking to your GP about checking your skin.
About Dr Khalesi
Dr Khalesi is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) with nearly two decades of experience in family medicine and a special interest in skin cancer. He holds a PhD in skin cancer from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and a Diploma of Skin Cancer Surgery, and has published research in peer-reviewed international journals. He speaks English and Persian (Farsi).
What happens during a skin cancer check?
A skin cancer check with Dr Khalesi is a head-to-toe examination of your skin. He uses a dermatoscope — a handheld magnifying instrument with a built-in light — to look closely at moles, freckles and spots.
If a spot needs further attention, Dr Khalesi will explain your options, which may include monitoring it over time, taking a biopsy or removing it. He also performs surgical removal of skin cancers, moles, cysts and lipomas under local anaesthetic, including flap and graft repairs where needed.
To make the most of your appointment:
– Make a note of any spots that are new or have changed
– Remove nail polish and make-up if you can
– Wear clothing that is easy to remove
When should I see a GP about a spot?
Don’t wait for a scheduled check if you notice a new spot, a mole or freckle that changes in size, shape or colour, or a sore that doesn’t heal. Book an appointment with your GP. How often you need a routine skin check depends on your personal risk, and your GP can advise you on this.
Weekday and Saturday appointments from November
Dr Khalesi currently consults on Saturdays. From November 2026, he will also be available on WEEKDAYS, giving you more choice when arranging a skin check.
